HI, I’M CARRYN

I’m a South African photographer who specializes in creative portraiture, or ‘portraits with an angle’.

We all want to look great in photos, right? That’s why I offer an all-in-one solution – I help with makeup, styling, finding locations, the photography (of course) and post-production. This ensures that my subject is captured in the best possible light (see what I did there?). It also means that my subjects can look like a million bucks, without having to spend it!

Photography is my happy place, so I strongly believe in creating a relaxed and happy atmosphere on a shoot. I know this is how to get the best out of my subjects, whether they’re seasoned professionals or first-timers. I believe in taking my time on the day, and letting things evolve naturally.

With every shoot, I try to get a little more creative. I like the idea of taking an otherwise ordinary concept and adding something simple but special to create a story or an edge. That’s what I call ‘portraiture with an angle’.

HOW I CAUGHT THE PHOTOGRAPHY BUG

Taking beautiful pictures was my first passion. When I was about 13 years old, growing up on a farm in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, I borrowed (stole) my Mom’s film camera to take photos of my new born nieces Kirsty and Jasmine. Their cute little expressions were too precious not to capture in some way that we could hold on to. I became my family’s go-to photographer for babies and children – and I have a large family!

Soon I realised I may have the potential to do this on a more serious level.

Then I joined Instagram! Ah CRAP. I was shocked at how high the standards for photography can be. After the initial urge to sell my camera, I decided NO! I was going to get better, learn more, and give this my best shot (excuse the pun).

In 2016, I started taking photos for South African Indie-Folk & Pop artist Rowan Stuart, joining him on tours, capturing his live shows, and providing many of his general images for social media. I learned a lot in a short space of time, and began doing more and more freelance work – which is what led me to this story on this website.

AIMING AHEAD

Although I’m learning all the time, it’s great to look back and see how far I’ve come along my journey, and it makes me excited for the future and my pursuit of becoming the best photographer I can be.
